Decoding #CyberChoices: What "modding" and "cracking" actually mean. |

Hi
To the untrained ear, a teenager talking to their friends online can sound like they are speaking an entirely different language. But if your child is highly skilled in coding or gaming, some of the words they use might mean they are flirting with illegal activity.
Many young people use malicious tools thinking they are just "mods," "cheats," or a normal part of the gaming community. Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, however, using these tools without permission is a serious criminal offense. Here is a quick #CyberChoices glossary to help you de-mystify what they are actually saying: The Gateway Glossary
⚠️ The Danger to Everyday Users: If anyone in your house searches for cracked versions of everyday creative software, tools, or music programs (such as AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, or Ableton Live), please be warned. A significant percentage of modern "crack" sites are traps. Instead of software, they trick users into downloading "infostealers" (like Vidar or Raccoon), which instantly copy your web browser's saved credit cards, crypto-wallets, and passwords.
Hearing these terms doesn't mean your child is a criminal—it means they are curious, highly capable, and tech-literate. These exact same concepts form the core of legitimate, high-paying jobs in professional network engineering and penetration testing (ethical hacking). Spoiler Alert: Look out for future emails on White v Black Hat.
If you hear these words being thrown around, don't panic. Ask them:
